Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare accommodation for growers and finishers
  • Identify and follow biosecurity procedures that apply to entering and working on a pork production site
  • Identify health and safety hazards, and assess risks and control risks prior to commencing tasks
  • Select, prepare and fit appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the tasks and conditions
  • Select, clean and/or disinfect and prepare accommodation for grower and finisher pigs according to pig, safety and security requirements and enterprise procedures
  • Check and/or adjust temperature, ventilation, humidity and other environmental conditions to meet pig needs
  • Check and prepare feeders and drinkers according to manufacturer instructions and/or enterprise requirements
  • Check for signs of pests and/or predators according to enterprise procedures
  • Dispose of waste according to enterprise biosecurity and environmental procedures
  • Resolve, record and report issues according to enterprise procedures
       
Element: Carry out grower and finisher pig operations
  • Identify hazards, and assess and control risks related to grower and finisher pig operations
  • Select and fit PPE according to enterprise safety and biosecurity requirements
  • Provide water and feed according to established feeding plan and schedule
  • Monitor pig behaviour, welfare and health daily, and action and/or report issues according to enterprise procedures
  • Apply and record treatments to pigs according to Farm Treatment Plan or Approved Medication List, using safe manual handling and low stress animal handling techniques
  • Report abnormal or unexpected mortalities as required
  • Remove dead pigs, and record according to enterprise biosecurity and environmental requirements
  • Move pig groups as required in line with growth, condition and stocking density
       
Element: Select and prepare sale pigs
  • Identify pigs that are ready for sale according to enterprise requirements
  • Assess pigs as fit to load for transportation prior to loading
  • Separate pigs not fit to load and take appropriate action according to enterprise procedures
  • Undertake or verify property branding for every sale animal
  • Complete PigPass National Vendor Declaration (NVD) and/or other documentation
  • Move pigs being sold into loading area and/or load pigs onto transport vehicle as required, using safe and low stress handling techniques

Assessment Tasks
